Brief
This third year brief requires that we create an editorial design using one of Jeanette Winterson’s short stories. We are tasked with identifying a concept within the short story as well as developing an art direction board that is influenced by a design movement of our choice. From the identified concept and with the art direction board, we have to develop our own visual elements, whether it be photographic, typographic or illustrative.
These visual elements should take into consideration how they are framed, the style influencer, the flow of the story, their interaction with the typography and the style specific to the target audience. Other things we have to consider include how colour, typeface choice, punctuation marks and texture may be used to add interest to the text without detracting from the featured story.
Baroque Movement
The artistic style known as baroque started back in 1600. It is a style that communicates religious themes and overly dramatic emotional involvement. Baroque as a style is closely connected to the Catholic church. This style is characterized by stressed emotions, exaggerated motion and detail used to produce a dramatic effect. Baroque paintings interplay between light and dark in order to achieve high contrast and a dramatic atmosphere.
